About Me

Maria-Family-Session-31.jpg

Born and raised in San Francisco, Maria now resides in Austin, Texas with her four children, seven dogs, a grumpy senior aunty that keeps her on her toes, and a mother that drives her batty. She is a proud and eternal matriarch.

Maria is currently the Chief Operations Officer for the half Helen Foundation (hH). hH provides free vision care services to students in low income schools in the Austin area. Prior to working for hH, Maria worked for the Texas Charter Schools Association for close to ten years, advocating for high quality public charter schools. Following law school, Maria also spent a year working as a law clerk for Schulman, Lopez, Hoffer & Adelstein, the leading law firm representing charter schools in Texas.

After a ten year hiatus to raise her family, she returned to school and received her degree in Business Administration from St. Edwards University in the spring of 2012. After 5 years of juggling law school, a commute, working full time, and single momming it, in May 2018, Maria received her Jurisprudence Degree from St. Mary’s School of Law. Maria is licensed to practice law in Texas.

Social justice and community service are driving passions in her life. A few of her personal goals are to open a non-profit organization with a social welfare mission, a dog rescue ranch, and working in some capacity influencing criminal justice and mental health care reform. There is an MFA in Creative Writing in that life bucket list, too.

Enjoys reading, writing, and expressing her thoughts, not necessarily in that order. Just a woman who writes to make people laugh, smile, think, and even to inspire. Works in the day, attends school at night, writing in between every chance she gets. Short stories, essays, and memoirs are her poison.

One day she intends to finish writing the book she’s been working on and hopefully, if enough of you like this blog, she’ll have some fans willing to buy it.

Mother. Writer. Genius (or just smarter than the average bear). Self Proclaimed Comedian. Queen of her Queendom.

Full disclosure: As a creative writer I reserve my right to embellish or omit details from the stories in my blog. This blog is not a clear map of my life. It’s a glimpse of pieces of it, with added pizzazz for entertainment.

Hello Maria! My name is Dinah. I went to elementary school with Rodney back in those days when life was simple, and we were carefree. I loved your V-day blog so much, I had to repost it on my FB page! I admire your charisma and your motivation for pursueing your dreams of obtaining a degree in law and writing a book! Thank you for sharing your thought and insights on love and life…I am definitely a new fan and follower! God Bless you, Rodney and your four beautiful children.

You are too sweet. I do remember you, the same way I remember all of the older kids at Longfellow and Denman (you, Rodney, Joann, Rose, Em, etc), in that I-want-to-be-just-like-them kind of memory. I appreciate your comments and your sharing my post. And I really appreciate you took the time to tell me..
